Malta's Water Services Corporation states that public tap water complies with the applicable EU Drinking Water Directive and is safe to drink. Malta's drinking water is produced from a blend of groundwater and desalinated seawater, and chlorine is used to help keep the public supply safe. The mineral composition and chlorine can influence the taste and smell of tap water. A suitable drinking water filter can significantly improve the taste of water used for drinking, cooking, tea and coffee.

They solve different problems. A water filter is primarily used to improve drinking-water quality, taste and odour, while a water softener treats hardness minerals responsible for limescale.

If your main problem is scale on taps, showers and appliances, a water softener is the appropriate solution. If your main concern is drinking water, choose filtration or reverse osmosis.

A standard activated carbon drinking water filter is not a replacement for a water softener.
